Background of the Senior High School Department
The Senior High School (SHS) program of SSC-R Manila offers two additional two (2) years (Grades 11 and 12) in compliance with the K to 12 program of the Department of Education (DepEd) and in order to address the need to academically prepare students to be ready to meet the demands of the local and global communities. It is in this light that San Sebastian College – Recoletos, Manila became a pilot school that offered SHS program a year earlier than the mandated school year of implementation.

The SHS of SSC-R, Manila offered four (4) strands of the academic track, namely: Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

SHS creates the following opportunities: Standard requirements will be applied to make sure graduates are ready for work. In SSC-R Manila, the students are prepared so that they are qualified to apply for TESDA Certificates of Competency (COCs) and National Certificates (NCs) to provide them with better work opportunities if they opt to work after graduation.

The Accounting, Business and Management (ABM) strand under the Academic Track allows students to be equipped with skills and knowledge they need to work in the corporate world. This Senior High School strand is for students who want to become business leaders and entrepreneurs. If running a business, talking to clients, and coming up with strategies to earn money sound like your ideal career, then ABM is the right strand for you.

With the ABM strand, students will get to spend more time understanding Applied Economics, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, Accountancy, Business, Management, Business Math, Business Finance, Business Organization and Principles in Marketing as you are being prepared to become future entrepreneurs and “business man” of the world.

The GAS Strand enables the students to weigh their options on what career path they want to pursue. While the other strands are career –specific, the General Academic Strand is best for students who are still unsure on which track to take. GAS is a Senior High School Strand that contributes students to a holistic approach in the academe.

It is the best strand to choose if you don’t know yet the course you want to take in college. GAS offers subject that can also be taken in another track. It is a general study of all tracks. You can choose the specific course you are inclined to in college because it a general preparation of all courses. It teaches Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Economics, Organization and Management, and Disaster Readiness that is being offered in other strands.

HUMSS is the strand that attracts students who love the Classics/Classical Ideas, the type of individuals who ask the question, what is on the other side of the wall, people who are curious about the things around them. They are the students who love reading, the same group of people who read today who will lead tomorrow.

Subjects in HUMSS tap the potentials of the students, lead them to their academic inclinations and hone their skills in reading and writing, which enhances at the same time the students’ skills in public speaking. HUMSS graduates are hired as clerks, customers service representatives and call center agents

STEM promotes the development of students’ scientific minds towards excellence in Science, Technology, and Engineering.

The STEM strand equips the students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude for science and technology-oriented programs in tertiary education by providing a solid foundation in Math with Calculus and Science with Physics, Biology and Chemistry. The STEM strand prepares the students in addressing school and community environmental issues by being equipped with technical knowledge and skills in research and by being able to collaboratively work with a team.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Will I be allowed to shift strand?

ANSWER: Yes, students must undergo thorough evaluation process by the Academic Strand Advisers for the advice on the subjects to be enrolled.

2. How can you help me if ever I failed a specific subject?

ANSWER: The Academic Intervention Program provides remediation on the failed subjects. However, this 20- hour Bridging Program is not a guarantee of obtaining a passing mark as the student needs to attend the class and submit necessary requirements as part of the subject requirements.

3. Do you accept transferees (student who finished Grade 11 from other school)?

ANSWER: Yes, provided that the student submits the necessary requirements upon enrollment such as copy of grades from previous school and certificate of Good Moral Character. His/her credentials will be evaluated with SSC-R’s New Curriculum.

4. Do you accept cross – enrollee student?

ANSWER: Yes, as part of our commitment in providing Catholic Christian education, we accept cross – enrollees after thorough evaluation and that all necessary permits such as the permit to cross – enroll are submitted to us for enrolment.

5. Do you accept enrollees for the 2nd Semester?

ANSWER: Yes, provided that the student submits the necessary requirements upon enrollment and undergoes evaluation process for the necessary subjects to be advised for enrollment.

6. Will I be included in the graduation list if I enroll as Grade 12 student during the 2nd Semester?

ANSWER: Yes, if there are only few subjects left (maximum of additional three (3) subjects) to be enrolled and are offered in the same semester of enrollment.
No, if there are too many subjects that is needed to be enrolled and are not offered in the same semester.

7. Do you accept enrollees from Non-Sectarian school?

ANSWER: Yes, we accommodate all students who belong to different religious sectors. We have Muslim and Iglesia ni Cristo students who excel in curricular and extra-curricular activities.

8. Can I still avail my ESC Voucher (government subsidy) if I stopped schooling within the school year?

ANSWER: No, the privilege of the ESC Voucher can only be availed by students who continuously enroll and finish Senior High School.

9. Can I apply for work after Senior High School?

ANSWER: Yes, a student who graduated from Senior High School in SSC-R, Manila is equipped, skilled and a holistically developed individual who are armed with Sebastinian Graduate Attributes ready to face the challenges of the world.
